Dead Rising 3: Apocalypse Edition

Dead Rising is such an iconic name that it would be a shame to not see it on the Xbox One.  Thankfully it got the full launch treatment and you’d be forgiven for missing this release, now Capcom has released the Apocalypse Edition, combing the entire season pass content together in one neatly priced bundle, so how does it fair?

For those newbies amongst you looking in on Dead Rising 3: Apocalypse Edition wondering what the hell is going on I can sympathise.  Dead Rising is the ultimate chaos game.  The freedom to wreak havoc on unwilling zombies is fun but you’d expect some real issues with that.  Surprisingly everything seems to tot up nicely for Dead Rising, it shows off the graphical nightmares with ease and the gameplay is smooth as an axe cuts through the flesh.

Sound is spot on to what Hollywood has already mastered and adds real affect to the game, as does the surroundings.  The feel of real terror yet knowing that you can get out of it is something which Dead Rising can really shout about and does.  It truly is in a class of its own.

Nick, our hero, has been thrown into this ridiculous chaos and must fight to survive and fight for answers.  Along the way you get given, and make yourself, some fantastic weapons and the developers imagination seems no bounds was again for the third time in the franchise’s history.  The added downloadable content which is available through the season pass or free with this edition, tacks on the four Untold Stories of Los Perdidos.  Sadly no Super Ultra Dead Rising Dead Rising 3 Arcade Remix Hyper Edition EX Plus Alpha which seems a bit of a kop out in my opinion.

The map you play in is probably the only issue you might face in Dead Rising 3, its disjointed maze like structure can seem a harder battle than the zombies at times but will add to your challenge which is what Dead Rising 3 can lack at times.  The boss battles are fun and original from the original series and the surroundings they are based in are crafted wonderfully.  Thankfully there aren’t any ridiculous saving toilets in this new release!

Once again Dead Rising has shown market leading imaginations with its weapons and the addition of special vehicles makes things livelier! Co-op is a huge part of this game and makes it fantastic with some real laughs involved coupled with these new weapon additions, there is plenty to sink your teeth into.

Ive always thought with these games there isn’t any particular challenge outside of boss battles but the game seems to show off an interesting AI idea, with Zombies clearly looking to disrupt you from escaping by moving in a way which blocks windows, doors etc.  A nice twist and a good addition to make it a bit more interesting.  It also gives you the chance to see the graphics and animation with the different weapons of which they are in abundance, making the game last longer and longer as you progress through the story.

The untold stories show the path of where the nightmare began, with 4 unique versions of the event.  Without ruining it for you, people are to blame and the stories add some good depth and back story to the game if you were interested.  But its story it’s particularly about what happened so it doesn’t really flow and is abit underwhelming, seeing what happens next for Nick would have been better.  Dead rising 4 anyone?

Overall fans of Dead Rising will probably already have this game, it’s slick and plays better than the previous 2, if you’re new to this, I’d buy the original version and leave the DLC extra cost for now and see what you think.  An enjoyable experience but nothing to make you go wow, it might be a fair comment to say that Dead Rising needs an injection of something new to accompany its solid foundations.

Many Thanks to XCN and Microsoft once again for their fantastic support and content.
