Xbox One Review - The Living Dungeon

I have to be honest, I'm not a fan of board games that involve crazy looking dice and cards telling me what magic spell will be more potent to destroy the wicked witch. I am talking about the Dungeons and Dragons style of game. They bore me to death and make me happy that people turn these into video games, so that Joe Bloggs, like myself, can play them without feeling the need to don a mac and hang about in a Games Workshop (there's one in EVERY STORE, go and check)

The Living Dungeon is a similar deal, in that you have multiple characters trapped in this dungeon that can morph and change as you play on each level, dependent on the dice you roll and the luck you have on your side. Luck wasn't on the developer's side when they made this however, especially in the graphics department.

I mean this should have been on an XBox 360, maybe even older than that, as it is horrible to look at, seriously. In a day and age where graphics are becoming so lifelike, why are we looking at something that is so unpolished and bland? It truly is horrendous. The dialogue in the game isn't much better and it sounds like friends of the developers were given a chance to win a talking part in a cereal packet, with"obviously hilarious results" which instead ends up giving us something which sounds like a bad English dub on a Chinese action film. I wish I was kidding.

There's a multiplayer mode, which isn't the worst thing I've encountered and even the single player, for all the cosmetic flaws, doesn't actually play too badly. For the style of game that it is, which is a big factor in reviewing this, it plays in an intuitive manner, which isn't too bad, as you could easily give up on it after a few turns because of bad gameplay, but it does ok.

So, the characters and story are uninspiring and they sound like they should be stacking shelves at a supermarket, the graphics are old school retro already and need the starch cleaned out of them and it is based on a game style that geeks phone into work sick about. The fact it plays well enough for that style of game though is what saves this from being awful. I have always said that gameplay should always come over graphics and this time it has. It is a simple interface, with some easy to use strategy thrown in, resulting in something that is easy enough to get into and hard to master. There are gems you use to change certain dice and bear in mind you have to use these sparingly. There are also sentinels and shadows, which are pretty dangerous foes to come up against in later levels.

As I have already mentioned, The Living Dungeon is not really my cup of tea, but as I can see who this game is aimed towards, I can understand the logic and it works well enough. It isn't going to break any sales records, but if you are really into D&D games and need something to scratch that itch then you could give this a go.

It isn't my thing, but it will be someone else's. Dungeon Keeper 2 on the other hand..... Now THERE was a game.

Average, which means only one thing....
