Shanghai Port Season 38

So another season in the fantasy league comes to a halt. Deadline day has passed and what a day that was. And now we are all eagerly awaiting the fun to begin all over again. In this blog we’re gonna look at some highs,Lows and just what could of been with a bit of Lady Luck.

Coming into the season there was an air on anticipation and a bit of trepidation. And when the fixtures came out it all became a bit more of a realisation that I could be in for a dogfight at the wrong end of the table when you consider I had Burga, Aaron and Ash as my first 3 games.
Now my squad wasn’t the strongest to start with. Martinez was going to be crucial to anything I did in attack, Mixed with a midfield of youth and some pace around the wings to provide the width and the cutting edge that was going to be my main focus going forward. In pre season Brennan Johnson saw an influx of PMs but even though they were generous offers I had to stick with the new welsh wizard and I’m so glad I did. He was at the heart of most attacks. Squad depth was also quite poor with no real threat off the bench. The biggest buy in the run up was Silas. £40M on a player I hoped would be a star asset. He had his moments but was sold for 26.5M in the latter part of the season. More on transfers later.

In the 40 games played over the league and cup most of the 11 played all season. We had 1 Red card by Y Fofana, and The only players to NOT play was Semenyo and my sub keeper B.Reynet.

The league is where the bragging rights happen. Where games become more important as the weeks go on and your furiously looking at the table working out the permutations to make sure your not in that dreaded relegation scrap.
9 Points from those first 3 games was a start that took the pressure off me straight away. And by week 6 we had amassed 6 wins and 6 defeats. At least I’m consistent. Week 7-9 saw me up against Mika, Brian and Morris who was struggling to stay connected at the wrong end of the table. Picking up 5 wins and 1 draw from that set of fixtures propelled me right up the table, safety looked almost guaranteed which certainly helped take the pressure off each game.
4 game weeks left. 12 games to really make a move. 6 points from Chrillino, 4 against Topcat just left Games against Jam and Sweaty. 2 fixtures which i have struggled in previously. So to come away with another 9 points made for the table to look a thing of beauty. My highest finish in the fantasy leagues since I joined.

The cups were again quite productive until I met Burga in the KO stages in both competitions. Unfortunately no silverware to be added this season.
The eliminator saw me progress into the QF stages.

Stage 1 saw 9 /12 points taken
Stage 2 saw 6/9 points taken
Stage 3 saw 6/9 Points taken
Even though I beat Burga in Stage 1, I wasn’t hopeful of a repeat. His team was far superior all over and the better player won.
The league Cup was the same score. A 2-1 defeat to Burga in round 3 after decent wins against Phil and S8TY in the previous 2.

Plenty of movement in the transfer market for me this season. Having put a massive outlay on some players to strengthen early for next season which was the focus to build now rather then wait until the start of next season. It remains to be seen if this was a good move considering we’re now brassic and will be scrapping to make the wage bill sustainable.

So with Plenty of if my Keeper did this moments, maybe if my keeper had saved that, I’ve come to realise that it would be the same for all parties in the 26 games we play in the league. We have to take the rough with the smooth and carry on loving and loathing the game ready to do it all again next season. It’s been an eventful season and one where it just wasn’t to be.

It’s doubtful I will be remaining here in China so From Shanghai with love, Suited is over and out, until next season.
