The Matchplay Knockout Cup on the AG Tour is the big chance for the top players to grab a trophy, as there are no handicaps, so your skill is all that counts when you go head to head on the course. When the random draw was made, it looked like most of the top players were in the bottom half of the draw, which was going to make it tougher for those experienced players, but also provide the opportunity for one of the unfancied names to come through in the top half.

The first couple of rounds were played on an easy course, the Sleeping Giant, with most of the field receiving a bye on Round 1. In the only tie of the round one of the contenders on the Tour, Joe made an early exit, losing 3 and 1 to fallball80 . The American pulled off another impressive win in Round 2 as well, squeezing past Berty44 by the narrowest margin, 1 hole. Round 2 saw some big wins as the competition sorted the men from the boys, with comfortable margins for IDanger IMouse, RFC Buncey, Riverman, wellsa27, Red Rhinoceros and Tunners1.

The action switched over to the Hookenslice course for the quarter finals, but that didn't faze RFC Buncey who beat Riverman comfortable by 6 and 4. The favourite Red Rhinoceros also won by the same margin against Tunners1 in the other side of the draw, with the other victors being deareststorm who came through a very tight game against IDanger IMouse, and fallball80 who kept pulling off surprising wins by knocking out wellsa27 3 & 2 in a very competitive game.

We were down to the final four and the difficulty level of the courses was ramped up as the semi-finalists took on Pebble Beach. fallball80's run came to an end as he was beaten by the accurate play of Red Rhinoceros, going down 7 & 5. Unfortunately deareststorm didn't make it onto the course in time and RFC Buncey went through to the final, which no-one would've predicted at the start for a player that hadn't cut his teeth on the AG Tour like everyone else.

The televised final was played on the very tricky Merion East Golf Course. Both players struggled with form on the early holes and it was impossible to call a result just by watching the front 9. The favourite Red Rhinoceros was only one hole in front at the turn, and nothing had changed after 12 holes. Rhino then stepped up his game with a birdie on the short par 3 13th, and hit par on the following hole when RFC Buncey could only score a bogey. Being 3 down with 3 to play, Buncey was running out of holes, and despite a stunning 45 foot putt, he could only tie the hole and Rhino took the title 3 & 2.

Congratulations to Red Rhinoceros on winning the Cup, hopefully everyone enjoyed the different format, and this kind of competition can be run many more times for the AG golfers.
