Titanfall Beta Review

Titanfall has been something which Xbox players have been salivating over since E3 2013, finally Respawn have unleashed the beta upon us, with 3 modes, 2 maps and a tutorial it’s time to enter what could be the next level in Xbox One gaming, its been tapped as that anyway.  Thanks to Xbox for letting me get the chance to get onto the beta.

Let me start by simply brushing over the basics so you get a feel of what’s to come on March 13th.  Titanfall consists of 2 teams of 6 human players pitted against each other, also involved AI bots acting as players.  Killing a human player offers more XP points than a AI bot kill, as you’d expect.

When first hearing about this scheme I was very apprehensive, thinking it wouldn’t work and there wouldn’t be a good balance.  How wrong I was, the balance works beautifully, the challenge of a human player is magnified by the AI players whilst giving those players who struggle the chance to get the thrill of killing another player, without actually realising it’s the AI.

Keeping the tone to the balance the game is wonderfully crafted, the movement from foot to titan hot seat, when you earn a “Titanfall”, is impressive to say the least.  The titans themselves ooze class and put on a real show which makes this game so unique, what is maybe more impressive is maybe the scope that Respawn have to deal with here, there is a lot to improve and play with as far as advancement and DLC is concerned.

What is on offer multiplayer wise is 3 modes, Attrition standard TDM, Hardpoint the standard Domination and Last Titan Standing which is what it says on the tin.  All great fun and this is where Titanfall comes into its own, it really is one big adrenaline rush.  Will that fade off? Maybe so but you can already see that there is much scope for growth as before mentioned.

For a beta Titanfall is truly impressive, it does exactly what you would want a beta to do, it drags you back and makes you play more.  If Respawn are telling the truth and this only really scratches the surface then we are in for a real treat and all the hype we have had from the media is well justified.  The whole beta is smooth as velvet, new concepts and new ideas seem to come together in one beautifully looked and exciting to play experience.

The only downside I found with this whole beta was the servers.  Guess who publishes the game? EA.  I hope that this is just a jitter but EA’s terrible track record with server issues is not something which will give the veteran gamer confidence.  I’d expect them to solve the issues that being said, Microsoft has a lot riding on this for the “console wars.”

So with that in mind I can’t wait to see how Respawn improve and add to this already good gameplay, and me saying that is so impressive.  When playing you forget this is only a beta, the game is expected to be another step up which is a real eye opener.  Do we have a game changer on the market? Its too early to say but the signs are very good, very exciting and I can’t wait to get stuck in to the full edition in March.

The beta is running to the 18th with the final codes being introduced up until the 17th.  Plenty of time for you guys to get involved and I seriously hope you do!
