Spy Chameleon - Xbox One Review

"They seek him here, they seek him there"

The history of gaming is littered with games headlined by animals ranging from hedgehogs to geckos. Unfinished Pixels, Spy Chameleon puts you in control of said chameleon whose ability to change colour and blend into the environment is you key to success. As stealth puzzlers go Spy Chameleon is pretty simplistic. Avoid various cameras and guards in order to reach the end of seventy five levels which increase in difficulty and all for the bargain basement price of £3.99.

Spy Chameleon draws you in with its simple early levels that do just enough to hook you and then it hits you with a steep jump in difficulty. The security cameras that were once only attached to walls and static robots are now attached to robots that move or stuck in some very strange places. And this is where your colour changing ability comes into play. Different coloured rugs are your only means of avoiding detection by changing your skin colour to red, blue, yellow or green so it matches the colour of the carpet. Get even further into the game and the floor will change colour while you are on it so quick reactions are required.

To help with the games longevity there are online leaderboards so you can compare your time against your friends list or the best in the world. The controls are precise and very sharp and they need to be when switching between the different colours at a rapidly changing rate on the later levels. Thankfully there are checkpoints which will give you the option to start all over again or from a specific point should you get caught out. Every stage has separate objectives, for those of you who insist on completing absolutely every single thing. Flies and ladybugs in each stage can be collected so you can complete each stage 100% and there are also times to beat.

There isn’t an awful lot more to Spy Chameleon. Its a simple enough game that anyone can just pick up and play and there is quite a challenge the further you get into it. For a game that is priced at £3.99 it can be a welcome distraction for 5 or 10 minutes and I found myself only playing it in short bursts.
