Polychromatic Review

Sometimes simple is just about right, you don’t need to be complex with lots of toys and fancy tricks to impress and keep your crowd engaged and enthralled, sometimes bright colours and a fast pace are just the ticket to success.  Simplicity to its core is how I’d describe Polychromatic; the latest of the ID @Xbox games AbsoluteGaming has had the privilege of reviewing.

The game features, once again, a very simple concept with you controlling a small hexagon around a confirmed circular area, with the AI controlling lots of smaller, faster shapes which explode into colour when hit by the firing arsenal of the Hexagon.  It’s simplistic touch makes the game both challenging and exciting at the same time, a deadly combination.

Polychromatic excels with its use of the controls, with left thumb stick being used for steering, the right for the gun, and the bumpers for boosts and finally the triggers for the special blast for those tight spots.  Nothing fancy just the basics done very well.  Polychromatic has 3 game modes for you to try, the Endless mode which comprises of 3 lives for the player to use and fight through the waves.  Timed brings a limit on the amount time you have to rack up the kills with each wave bringing more and more action and finally 1 life mode.

Combining the special abilities takes skill and precision which add to the challenge, the more and more you play Polychromatic the more you learn but it doesn’t detract from the fun factor with modes constantly challenging, keeping you on your toes.   The sad thing here is you can blow through everything very quickly, the colours and music are excellent and add to the feel of the game giving it that faster pace but overall like many ID @Xbox games this struggles with replay ability.

All that being said, I had genuinely great time on Polychromatic, it’s nifty use of simplistic controls heavy base filled theme music and an explosion of colour with every wave gave me great satisfaction and made me want to top the high scores atop of global leader boards.  Many thanks once again to XCN and Microsoft for allowing me to review Polychromatic.
