I love it when I get a chance to play a ID game. I really do. It offers something a bit different to a full mainstream game, and you know you`re going to get something that`s different and offers something unique and different to the table. ID Developers normally operate in a much smaller scale and close team, and it`s fantastic for them to see their game that at some point they probably thought that it may not even make it.
But, let me come to Shred It! A game that is developed by Extra Mile Studios, and involves boarding. Lots of it. Is Shred it a game that I`d grow to love and add to the ongoing list of ID games that I am starting to favour, or was it a game that would make want to shred it apart?
Excuse the awful puns. I`m sorry. Shred It!. Shred It! Is a game developed by Extra Mile studios, a small team based in Glasgow, and have produced a range of games for a range of markets, including i0S Devices, PCs, Mobiles and of course, Consoles. Shred It! Is a game where you are tasked with boarding your way through a range of different areas and collecting leaves, as you aim to avoid a vast array of obstacles including rocks, ledges, wood sticks, polar bears just to name a few.
Now, I actually surprisingly found this game very, very fun. It doesn’t offer much in terms of a complex game, but it offers something quite unique and fun, and something that you`ll have easily noticed and most likely played on your mobile device or tablet. You may even have something similar. These sort of games all follow the same characteristics and conventions of these type of grab and collect games.

There are three modes on offer for you, two of which I found as the main game modes, and one game mode where you have no leaves or anything to collect, as you literally slide your way down the track taking in the view points and obstacle points. It`s a good method for being able to get to grip with the track and knowing where the obstacle points and piece are. But I`m going to talk about the two modes that for me I spent an awful lot of my time in, Endless Slope and Checkpoint Challenge.
Endless slope is the main game mode in Shred It! And this is where you are tasked with collecting as many leaves as possible sliding your way down the slope that as the title quite frankly suggests, is endless. The more leaves you collect, the more clips it will give you, and in return you can then use the clips to purchase new items such as new boards, costumes and characters. You are also tasked with collecting feathers that will also appear throughout the slope, and gathering a certain number of feathers (3 feathers) will result in a bonus leave area coming to you, as you`ll be able to slide your way through a stack of leaves and earn yourself some quality leavage.
Upon top of that, you will also find yourself collecting acorns, that you need to collect by going into them before the sneaky little blighters, foxes and other blightful little creatures grab them.
Daily, you`ll find yourself being given daily challenges, and these can result in an influx of paper clips coming to your disposal. Some of these challenges could include collecting a certain amount of feathers or acorns, and beating your high score. I found myself always checking them out and I never found them difficult, and it`s something you could easily do in half hour or less. If you`re someone who manages to get a really good score, you might find trouble beating that, but I doubt that very much.
Now, you might be wondering why it is called Shred It! Well, I have already mentioned that in a unique way, paper clips are used as the in-game currency, and what do you associate paper clips with? Paper. When you are sliding down the endless slope, if you look at the slope, you`ll also see that it is representing lined paper. And what do you put through a shredder? Paper!
Graphically, I quite like this. There`s something about this that very much reminds me of Little Big Planet, and for a game, I love the idea and where it has gone. I guess you could say that the characters and scenery all look like they have been drawn on paper, that goes back to the main theme of being paper based.
Shred It is a game that you will most likely have played on your mobile phone, or something very, very similar. I think though that Extra Mile have created a very fun and enjoyable game, that`ll keep you entertained wanting to grab your high score, and you`ll find yourself losing a fair bit of time with yourself and the kids sliding your way to some sort of personal victory.
A huge thank you to XCN for supplying us with a review copy.
