Alan Wake's American Nightmare Review

Alan wake if you didn't know already was a full game released in 2010, a physiological horror game, well this carries on in this vein and doesn't disappoint.

The story is set in the alan wake world but isnt a sequel, which is slightly confusing but should become clear as you play it, he is essentially stuck inside a script he wrote "Night Springs".

There are two game modes, story mode and arcade mode, we'll start off with the story mode, there is a few slight differences in this standalone game than Alan wake has, first of all it's not as long but it's enough for a xbla game, secondly it's more reliant on the action side of things instead of a psychological approach like Alan wake 1 which was a slight disappointment but I enjoyed it none the less.

Another interesting difference is the collectible manuscripts have become an incentive to collect as it allows you to gain extra weapons, which are scattered through the entire game in flashing black cases, there some new enemies in the game with splitters that break into two after shining your flash light on them, spiders, giant creatures with chainsaws and taken that turn into birds to try to swoop down and surprise you.

Graphically the game looks just as good as the original with the character models, lighting and environment which is an impressive feat considering this is an xbla title.

The locations in the game are used over and over again which was slightly disappointing but there's a purpose to it so its forgiveable, the same combat as the retail version of alan wake which is good as Alan wake veterans will get along with the controls as well, there’s the usual radio shows and tv in game that shows Mr scratch (who is Alan wake's evil doppelganger).

Arcade mode is like a horde mode where you have to survive wave after wave of enemies, it has an online leaderboard which keeps things interesting and this adds a new dimension to Alan wake and adds more value for money to this xbla title.

So in conclusion for 1200 ms points this isn't the worst points spent but if you're a big fan of Alan wake what are you waiting for? Go get it!

This game is part of the xbla house party and you'll get 800 points back if you buy them all.
