Fez - Hands On Review

The game starts slowly with Gomez the main character, the only character that is involved (bar the villagers). At first the world is in 2D which changes to a 3D world after a mysterious message from someone called geezer asks you to meet, which provides Gomez with a fez hence the name of the game.

Controls are very easy to pick up and this is what makes the game appealing, the standard controls you'd expect from a platform style game with some extra controls, LT or RT will also change the perspective which can help with collectibles and help progression ie to reach a ledge that from another perspective that was impossible to reach.

The graphics are a throwback to earlier 8 bit years but don't let that put you off as it adds to the charm of the game and is different from what you expect these days where it seems more graphics than actual gameplay is the norm.

The core elements of Fez is essentially collecting cubes to enable you to make a whole cube which goes towards the 32 cubes you need to complete the game 100%, it sounds an easy task but as you find out when you play it its far from an easy task. There are a number of times when you have no idea what you're doing or where you're going but the exploration is one of the fun parts of the game.

Fez is a game that frustrates and delights in equal measure, the object is simple but achieving the goal isn't, it is a game like no other which might put some gamers off but others will love it for the challenge and simplicity in the gameplay.

9/10
