I love a good horror. Whether that`s in the Cinema, or whether that`s in the comfort of my own home, I do love to be thrilled, shocked, scared and to come out of watching something that makes me fear. I love to have the same experience when it comes to games. We`ve seen a few horror games over the years that have made me do just that. Resident Evil 5 was a standout for me in terms of making me jump and fear around every corner, and recently more, The Evil Within was another that would shock you around every corner, not knowing what was going to be jumping at you. It`s what made the game spectacular and really push the horror limits. And playing at home, with the sound coming through your headset and the lights off, you really do have it the atmosphere to be spooked.

A few weeks ago, we were treated to another addition to the horror genre, and it would be the next instalment to the Resident Evil franchise, by Capcom. The addition of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was well hyped and in the run, one of the most looked forward to games, for me, it was a game that I was really hyped for, after playing all of the previous instalments. Is it a game though that`s going to be out there as being a standout game? Well, with the additions and changes they`ve made this game, the answer is yes.

Resident Evil 7 is a game developed and published by Capcom, and is the twenty fourth instalment to the Resident Evil franchise, however, a change by Capcom would also make it the first of it`s kind in the franchise. Resident Evil released on a range of consoles, aswell as VR. It tells the story of the game`s protagonist, Ethan Winters, as he searches for his wife Mia, that leads into a derelict house inhabited by the Baker family. Using a range of weapons and true Resident Evil style, he must defeat the bakers. Outstandingly though, Capcom have decided to take an entire different approach on the game, and have switched up from the third person POV, and switched it up to being the first person, and offers a more scary and horrifying experience and I think it`s the best move they`ve done. It offers the game in a completely different perspective, and if you play it in a true horror atmospheric environment (Like I mentioned earlier, turn off all lights and stick your headset in), you`ve truly got yourself a terrifying game. Going around every corner not knowing what`s going to jump out at you, and not knowing what`s there is a harrowing thought, and as the further in the game you go, the more the jump scares become apparent. Although we`ve seen Resident Evil games in the past with jump scares, I think the switch to the first person POV has really added it to another dimension. It`s a lot more in-your-face and full on, where perhaps I feel it wouldn’t have the same effect in the third person view. I think the first person POV has been a very smart move by Capcom, and I`d quite like to see them carry it on in the future games. I know a VR version of the game has been released, and with the release of Scorpio this year, you`d wonder if Capcom would release a VR update/version for Scorpio. The thought of playing Resident Evil in VR would be a truly harrowing experience, but a fantastic one too.

The story is one that`s going to grip you from the first moment. Throughout, you`re going to need to find out what happened to your wife, Mia, as you explore and discover the derelict house in the woods. Inhabited by the Baker Family, a terrifying group that will do anything they can to kill you, and survive the attacks through, you must kill the Bakers and find out the truth. It`s going to grip you, and with the gameplay throughout and all the jump scares that the story and game brings in, it does turn out to be a true horror, and mixed with the first person POV it makes it to be a great gripping story that`s going to have you on the edge of your seat. Aside from the different POV for RE7, there are lots of gameplay mechanics that you`re going to notice from the previous games. The use of herb plants and first aid kits are apparent, and the ability to combine different weapons and consumables to make more beneficial items. Only carrying what you really need, you`re going to need to carry wisely.

Enemies however throughout the game do seem to be a lot more over-powered than previous games. You`re going to need to conserve the ammo and make sure your shots do count, as they seem to be able to take a lot more hits than perhaps they should do. At times, they feel too over-powered and quite difficult to defeat. Especially when it comes towards the bosses in the game. Patience is going to be needed throughout.

Resident Evil 7 is a game that feels a new direction in the Resident Evil franchise. Perhaps it`s the move to the first person POV by Capcom (Which I must say is Excellent, and it`s a fantastic move by them) and it`s a game that`s going to grip you, both in terms of the story and gameplay. If you turn the lights out, stick your headset on, perhaps play with no one else in the house, then you truly have yourself a atmospheric game that`s really going to make you fear that someone else is in the house with you. Any game or film that`s associated with the horror genre should be able to make you fear and jump, and you`re going to get that with RE7. With DLC confirmed, I`m really looking forward to seeing where they take it. It`s a game though that already stands out for me in 2017, and I`m hoping to experience it in VR sometime, but Capcom can be very happy. And with it being a Xbox Play Anywhere title, you can also play it on your Windows 10 PC or tablet.
