I`m a huge Tom Clancy Ghost Recon fan. Some of my favourite Xbox 360 classics included Advanced Warfighter 1,2 and Future Soldier. I use to spend hours and hours of my time into the Ghost Recon franchise, and is by far one of the best franchises I`ve played. So, when Ghost Recon Wildlands was announced I was literally excited as hell for it. The latest instalment of the franchise and is the 10th game to join it. The time had come. It was time for me to jump down into Bolivia, and join the fight against the Santa Blanca group. The time was now. And I was about to be in for an adventure.


Ghost Recon Wildlands is developed and published by Ubisoft, and puts you in the role of Ghosts leader Nomad, who is tasked with his team of ghosts to go down into Bolivia and take on criminal gang Santa Blanca, who have turned Bolivia into a Narco-state area and the biggest suppliers of cocaine in the world. Over a range of areas, you`re going to need to take down several key members of Santa Blanca before getting to the ring leader, El Sueno and wiping out the entire Santa Blanca network.

Complete customization is at a foot here, and from the beginning you`re going to have that choice. You get to customize your character, and after  deciding the gender, you have complete control in how you want to look. Want a mask? You can have it. Want war-like paint? You can have it. Later in the game you`re going to be able to have complete customization over your guns and the attachments, but first you`re going to need a character to roll into Bolivia with. I know in previous games you can be quite limited with the character customization, well that isn’t the case with Wildlands.

Straight from the off, you`ll notice something completely different from the previous Ghost Recon games and that is that Wildlands follows an open-world approach. You`re going to be able to drive, jump on a water boat and jump on a helicopter to travel around, in what is a massive open-world map. The map is broken down into zones, and each zone has a key member of Santa Blanca that controls it. By completing missions, you`re going to be able to get to those members wiping them out, completing that zone and moving onto the next one. You`re going to need to collect major intel which will open up the missions for you to play in any order (There`s 6 in each zone, the first 4 can be done in any order, the last two will open up as you get towards the end of beating the Santa Blanca member for the zone), and aswell as Major intel, there`s a range of collectibles to collect at the same time, including Kingslayer files, Weapons caches (These will include weapon attachments for you to upgrade your guns), Skill points cache (These will give you extra skill points to develop your skills and abilities – I`ll talk more on this point in a bit) and a range of side missions that will give you extra needed to unlock skills and abilities. There`s so much to do in each zone, that it feels like even when you`ve completed the main story missions for each zone, you`ve not even really made a dent in it.

Over the course of the game, you`re going to be able to “tag” supplies in different areas, and these will give you some credit-like points in a different area such as Medical. These credits will work alongside the skills section of the game, and will enable you to have different skills that will help you and your team in enhancing your ability. These can include things such as having better stamina, better synchronisation shooting with your squad mates, longer range of drone control (The drone is used in each area to navigate and see where you`re enemies are hiding – This is brilliant before running straight into a fight and mission) and there`s loads more. But they all require credits in a specific area, and you can only gather these by tagging supplies and other bits around the map, so you need to keep an eye out for these as they are quite useful.


There are parts of the game that remind me very much of Ubisoft`s last Tom Clancy game The Division. The open-world and while there is a focus on co-op gameplay in Wildlands, it is a game that can be done on your own and can be really enjoyed as a Solo gamer. That was my worry after playing The Division, and although I quite liked The Division, some missions you had to jump online with someone, as it was near impossible for one man to do, but that isn’t the case with Wildlands. I had the chance to play some co-operative gameplay on Wildlands early on, and it`s great. And with a future update coming that will give us 4v4 multiplayer, it`s really going to give you a range of options when it comes to playing. As I said earlier, there`s so much more to each zone that completing the missions, so when the Multiplayer option comes along, you`re going to have so much to choose from.

Ghost Recon Wildlands is a game that Ubisoft had to get right. There was a lot of speculation in the lead up to the game that the switch from a linear story mission game to an open-world game would be an incredibly bad move, but it certainly hasn’t. It`s been an incredibly good move. With over 18 different zones to fully complete in terms of main missions, side missions, kingslayer files, weapon caches, skill point caches, it`s going to be feel a while before you even put a dent in completing each zone. Think of the Far Cry open-world games. Lots to do in each are of the map before even putting a dent in. But I think Ubisoft have done an absolutely fantastic job with Wildlands, and once they add the PvP mode to the game, I really do think we`ve got a fantastic game on the rise. I already can’t wait for the first DLC expansion they bring out in the coming months. But if you`ve not already, you need to pick up a copy, and jump down into Bolivia, because you`re missing out on the fight of your life.
