I was really looking forward to seeing Disney`s new Beauty and the Beast. A live action remake of the 1991 classic, and arguably one of Disney`s greatest and most successful films, Bill Condon`s take this year includes Harry Potter star Emma Watson and Dan Stevens in the main roles of Belle and the Beast. Is it a film though that`s going to do well? Or is it a film that`s one to stay away from? Well, every time, Disney seem to do it better and better and better, and with Beauty and the Beast, they carry on that trend.
The film follows the story of Belle (Watson), a young intellectual girl, who lives with her father, and after her father is captured by the Beast after picking a rose from a tree, Belle goes to the castle hidden in the snow and winter, where she encounters the Beast. From there, it`s a romantic story about realising that Beast is not what everyone thinks he is, and is a loving, gentle character, who must break the curse that is on him and his servants before the last rose petal falls.
The film is done incredibly well from the beginning, and one of the biggest surprises you`re going to get out of the film, is the powerful singing voice of Emma Watson. For older teenagers and younger adults, they`ll remember Emma Watson in the role of Hermione out of Harry Potter, a whole new generation of kids are going to remember her as Belle. Throughout the film her voice is stunning and every song is really something. She plays the part incredibly well, and really makes the character her own.
But, it`s not just Emma who makes the cast, and the rest of the supporting cast also play their parts incredibly well. With Dan Stevens portrayal of the beast who comes across aggressive at the beginning but is then portrayed into the 2nd half as a loving gentle character, and with Luke Evan`s portrayal as the villainous Gaston who wants to kill the beast and marry Belle, it`s a great cast and they all add to it. There isn’t a weak link in anyway. I`ve seen films before where there`s been characters that perhaps have felt let down, but that`s not the case with this.
Beauty and the Beast is a film though that hasn’t come without controversy. The film features the first gay character in any Disney film, and although it`s a shame to see some countries turn away from the film because of it, it does add another side to a Disney film, and the character of LeFou, is portrayed extremely well, and is a great addition to the cast. Although Gaston`s sidekick, He adds a comical side to things during the film and plays it exceptionally well.
Beauty and the Beast is a film that`s going to do very well and be enjoyed by lots of people. The film`s musical score and the singing from the cast is fantastic. It`s fully worth the watch, and Disney once again have pulled out a great film.
