FENCES FILM REVIEW

Every week, we see new releases in the cinema. Every single week, we get to see a new creation and work of art from a director and a company, and it`s something that is massive now. You have a range of films to take your pick from. There is literally something for everyone. And this time of year, it`s been Oscar and BAFTA season. The time of year where the films that have made the headlines and are nominated for a range of awards. Today, I`ve had the chance to see one of the nominated films that actually won a few awards, not only here in the UK, but internationally well. Fences is a film that has been critically acclaimed, and was a film that I was really looking forward to seeing. It`s a film that after watching, it`s not difficult to see why it`s been nominated.

Fences is a drama, starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis in the two lead roles. It is based on the play Fences, by August Wilson. It tells the story of Troy Maxson (Washington) and his wife Rose (Davis) as Maxson, a rubbish collector, who once was a negro baseball player, but failed to make the big leagues, something that he puts down to racism. His bitterness causes problems between him and his son, Cory who wants to make it in the big leagues.

I love a film that you go and see and feel connected to the characters. From the beginning of the film, we feel a connection with the lead characters of Troy and Rose. Denzel Washington and Viola Davis portray the characters extremely well (Viola Davis won most recently the BAFTA for best supporting actress) and there isn’t a weak link in the cast whatsoever. It`s a great take and every character is portrayed so well by their cast members that you feel a connection with each one. From Troy`s son Cory who wants to make the big leagues in football, to Gabe, Troy`s brother who fought in the war, but due to a brain injury now suffers with learning impairment, and Lyon, Troy`s eldest son. Each portrayment though is excellent.

Some of the scenes are strong – very strong in some cases. Domestic violence and abuse are not at their strongest but implied, and a film that has outdated racism. But it` s not always the visual imagery in the film that are the strongest parts. You can have a black screen with sound or nothing at all, and it can tell the story. For example, after the scene of Troy in the garden, with a baseball bat in his hand, about to swing, with visions of his previous history, to the next scene that we are shown (there is a blackout after Troy`s scene) where the audience are informed that Troy has died, and is a future moment and on the day of his funeral. The scene between Cory and Rose was effective and strong, and is perhaps the heartfelt moment of the film.

The film is very good, and it`s easy to see why it`s been nominated so many times for a range of awards. It`s a film that really does tell the story incredibly well and the character portrayment, especially from Denzel Washington and Viola Davis is incredible. It`s a film that does grip you with the story, and a film that`s going to do it incredibly well. It`s a film that may not be the standout film now, but it`s certainly easy to see why it`s talked about so much.
