F1 2012 Review

Rating: 0/5 (0 Votes)

Reviewed by Cullam Magee A.K.A MR MAG00

As we enter another action packed Formula 1 weekend in Japan at the Suzuka circuit. What better time for me to sit down and race around the oldest F1 circuit in the world on the new Formula 1 2012 by Codemasters. As Martin Brundle will take to the pit to review the cars for this weekend’s race, I sit down to review this much anticipated game.

To be the top dog in Formula 1 these days you need to have a lot of money behind you. You also need the raw talent and determination. To succeed as a driver in F1 2012 the video game takes the similar qualities, without the millions of pounds needed instead £40 should be enough to be able to get on that grid.

In the game it isn’t just the teams and cars which are true to life but also the fact you have to be an outstanding driver to be on that podium, and that is no different in the game.

This is a game which will challenge you with very few compromises. If you want to be No 1 you’re going to have to put in the hard work and show your dedication.

F1 2012 made by Codemasters is an amazing simulation of the motorsport and being a tough one to master. It’s a real boys and there toys driving game which requires you to know that track like the back of your hand, knowing when to be on that accelerator coming through that sweeping right hander and when you’re ready to use your DRS and KERS (GO FASTER BUTTONS). This game is all about being fast on the straights and careful through those corners and having a understanding of the sport wouldn’t hurt you either.

Whether you beat your friends fastest lap or win the British grand prix using Jenson Button in heavy rain with all the assists turned off, you can be sure to feel a great deal of satisfaction, because you know you’ve got there through skill and sheer grit.

However F1 2012 can sure be frustrating at times. You will be punished for the slightest of mistakes, whether it’s putting a wheel on that curb or hitting those brakes a bazillion of a second too late. The cars are extremely sensitive and ultra-responsive to very little input. Please don’t put off by this though as you only have yourself to blame as the game is designed to be unforgiveable as after all Codemasters have seem to keep this game as realistic as possible,  however there are ways you can make the experience less painful, such as driving aids and lowering the difficulty. There is very little point to playing this game if you’re going to be a big sissy and turn them on. If you’re going to do that you might as well just watch this weekend’s grand prix.

Letting the game help you with steering and braking may make things easier but won’t help you in the long run, seen as driving a Formula 1 car is not like dropping your kids at school in the Prius. Yeah you will get fed up at some points but that massive feeling of satisfaction you get when you cross that finish line more than makes up for it.

F1 2012 also provides a great sense of in the cockpit experience.

The in game visuals are outstanding. I really can’t see them improving much more on these with current consoles. You get a sense of what stress and strain F1 drivers go through under acceleration and braking. The sound quality was mind blowing, especially if you have a cheeky sub-woofer attached to your sound system although I don’t think I will be talking to the neighbours any time soon.

Codemasters F1 saga is now in its third year of the series and is quickly becoming a yearly Fifa-like annual release with all the latest teams’ liveries and stats.

This year’s new features include Champions mode in which you battle it out with past and present world champions to prove yourself and take on “THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE”.  In Champions Mode you go up against six F1 champions currently racing in the 2012 season in quick-fire scenarios.

These range from trying to keep behind Lewis Hamilton in the rain with the wrong tyres, to reining in Sebastian Vettel at Hockenheim while trying to get the fastest lap of the race.

For players after arcade-style thrills, Season Challenge allows you to pick a rival and race to try and beat him. Keep on doing so and you’ll soon win a new contract to a better team. You'll also be awarded a score at the end of the season, which you can compare with other racers and friends on the leader boards.

It’s a welcome lightweight addition to the simulation-heavy franchise, adding a more causal element to gameplay while not intruding on the hard-core career mode.

It is here where you find the authenticness of previous F1 games. Where the most minor of tweaks to tyres, brake balance and suspension prove to be a huge factor to a race victory as well as your driving skills. F1 2012’s career mode has real outstanding realism to it.

Also added this year is the new Young Drivers Test which is ultimately an extended tutorial but gives you a more sense of worth and rewards you for completing it. A real must for beginners!

We also see the return of online multiplayer with up to 16 players lining up on the grid plus a few AI controlled cars who like to sometimes like to throw their car down the inside of you on certain corners but be careful not to make contact as this game is no different to the controversy we see in the world of Formula 1 these days and you will pick up penalties.

It may not be a huge step forward from last year’s game but take to match last years and bolster what they had has easily made this a must play game. From the exotic locations to the detail of the in-car systems, it’s got everything a F1 NUT would want.

Formula 1 is without a doubt the pinnacle of motorsport and for another year Codemasters F1 takes what most men dream of as a young boy and delivers this in the comfort of your living room.

A very well rounded 8/10 from me.
