Deformers Review

It`s interesting to see and hear why a developer decides to go down the route they do when it comes to games. Why do they go down the single player only option? Why do they decide to go down a pure multiplayer route? A balance between the two? It`s something I always like when they come out to try and find, and it`s intriguing to find out the decisions behind the game.

Over the past week, I`ve had the chance to check out a new multiplayer game to the ID market, and that comes in the form of Deformers, developed by Ready at Dawn. Is it a game however that`s going to be a welcome addition to the ID market and the Xbox community? Or is it going to be a flop and fail? Well, I`m not too sure.

 

Deformers is developed by Ready at Dawn and published by GameTrust Games, and is a multiplayer Brawlout type arena game. Ranging across 3 modes, Death match, Team Death Match, and Form ball, you`re going to take control of a customized blob (Yeah, I quite enjoyed that one too) and you`re objective is simple. To wipe out the opposition by using your speed, power ups, and knocking the opposition out of the arena. It`s a game that although is quite basic and is very limited in terms of its game modes it offers, it is a game that`s going to give you quite a bit fun, but I do wonder how long one can have fun with a game like this before it starts to become rather tedious.

After quite a while in trying to get into a game (I`m not sure if I was just playing at the wrong times of day, but an average time for me to get into a game was around 5 minutes for each game mode, perhaps a bit shorter for Form Ball) I was thrown straight into the action and without a tutorial I was knocking around the arena not really having a clue what I was doing, hoping to knock someone off the arena and get a kill. Over the next couple of games, I started to gather the controls a bit more and they do become rather easy and simple, but for some there`s the first turn-off from the game. The lack of a tutorial. Something rather simply easy where you could have had a tutorial against AI would have sufficed and probably would have gone a long way. Although the controls are easy to pick up, had it been rather complex I think a lot of people would have gone straight from the start. The lack of a tutorial is a turn-off for some gamers, but once you`ve played a few games, it does become rather easy. The only mode that I really struggled with was Form Ball, where I`d go into the arena and just try and get a touch of the ball and let my team mates do the scoring. Form Ball is a bit of a spin-off of Rocket League and reminded me very much of Rocket League.

I do like the idea that Ready at Dawn with have gone with Deformers making it very much about the multiplayer and to be perfectly honest, there isn’t too many games on the Xbox One that I`ve played that`s done that. There`s a small handful of games that appear to have gone down a pure multiplayer route. But, I`m not too confident about how much and how far this game`s going to go with gamers. The lack of a range of game modes is a turn-off, the lack of a tutorial is a turn-off, and the long loading times into games can also be a turn-off. I`d say that I`m quite a patient gamer, and I give everything a chance. But, even I was starting to struggle to stay fully indulged into the game, and the fact that I was waiting ages to get into a game was one of the biggest petty hates of the game. I hate when I`m waiting ages to get into a game, and especially more so on a game that`s meant to be fully multiplayer based.

Deformers is a game that I`m really in two minds about. Once you get into the game, it`s quite fun, and although it`s not something that I could play for hours and hours and hours of, it`s a game that you`d get some enjoyment from. But the problem is that the game`s negatives outweigh the positives, and I`m not sure how well this is going to sit with gamers.
