The Walking Dead Season 3: Episode 4: Thicker Than Water Review

Rating: 5.00/5 (1 Vote)

It`s that time of every single game that we`ve had from Telltale where we start getting to the proper good stuff. Oh yes, it`s the penultimate episode, and this time, it comes from The Walking Dead: A New Frontier. Being released last week, we`re not too far from the ending, and after being left on a cliff-hanger at the end of Episode 3, we go into Episode 4 with stuff about to hit the fan, and be introduced to a range of characters. Is it an episode though that`s going to leave us dying for the last episode?

We carry on from the point of the previous episode where Javier, the main protagonist of the game and the character you control and his brother, David, have been caught by members of the council in Richmond, led by Joan, and are thrown into a basement like cell. David is taken by Joan and members of the council, and Javi escapes with the help of Kate, who seems to have made a miraculous recovery from being shot and wounded in the previous episodes. The episode follows the next steps of Javi, Kate, Gabe, Clem, David, Eleanor and Tripp and with the help of Ava, they plan a rally in the square where the Richmond crowd has been gathered, after it becomes apparent and known that Joan is planning to execute David for his crimes and his help with Javi and his crew. After a talk goes astray between the crew towards the end of the episode, it is revealed that Eleanor has snitched up Javi`s plan to Joan, and some of the most dramatic and climatic decisions are going to have to be taken at the end of the episode, when it is revealed that someone has to die and pay for the crimes. The ending results in the most actionic part of the episode, and probably has more action in than any of the previous episode. But it`s right at the ending where we are left on the cliff-hanger, and without spoiling too much, you`re going to be left with a moment that`s going to pull on your heart-strings, and is going to set up a cracking final episode.

In this episode, there seems to be a good mix between having the conversational type based part of the game that we`ve grown to know and love from the Telltale games (They are brilliant for their story-telling) and actually being able to do something other than select an answer. You`re going to be able to look for objects and interact with things, and from quite early on in this episode when you are trying to escape the basement, you`re going to have the chance to do that. We`ve seen in some episodes in the past where they`ve had quite a lot of conversational based interaction early on and that has gone on for quite a while before you`ve seen any sort of action or any form of different interaction, however in this episode, you get it quite early on.

It`s an episode that`s quite an interesting one and is probably the standout episode so far. Why? Because there is so much story to it and there are so many decisions that are probably going to influence the last episode of the series. It`s going to be really interesting and I`m really looking forward to seeing how the last episode holds out. I`m hoping that some of the decisions I`ve made in this episode, don’t come to bite me. But It`s an episode I`m really looking forward to, and once again, along with all the telltale series, it`s a series I`ve loved. Bring on the last episode!

A huge thank you to Telltale for providing us with a review copy of The Walking Dead: A New Frontier season pass.
