VICTOR VRAN: OVERKILL EDITION – XBOX ONE REVIEW

Rating: 0/5 (0 Votes)

Ahh, fresh meat.

When talking about RPGs one name always crops up, Diablo and rightly so. It’s a classic and unfortunately for ever RPG that gets released Diablo will always be the benchmark it must match or best. Victor Vran: Overkill Edition aspires to succeed where many have failed before and with an edition that includes the Fractured Worlds and Motörhead: Through the Ages DLC there is a lot of killing and looting to be done.

Victor Vran’s story starts off well enough but sadly it loses its appeal quite quickly. You are Victor Vran a renowned Demon hunter who arrives in the city of Zagoravia in search of his friend and fellow demon hunter Adrian. Zagoravia is plagued by all kinds of demonic creatures who find their way into this world through The Well of Worlds which are dimensional gates that tear holes from their reality into ours. Your quest to find Adrian is somehow linked with The Well of Worlds and you must find him and seal the gate forever. Bizarrely Victor finds himself guided by an omnipresent voice who sees all and hears all. You will talk to various characters along the way but they just seem to be there to try and add meaning to your quest and it’s the ever present narrator that gives you all the juicy information or a constant stream of piss poor jokes and I do mean constant.

As you would expect from an RPG there a lot of killing and looting going on and it’s the looting that has always hooked me in RPG’s. It becomes very addictive, very quickly. It’s the risk and reward part of my brain that pushes me to keep on collecting no matter how dire my circumstances become and Victor Vran: Overkill Edition hooked me instantly. I’m always one of the first to complain about grinding but in RPGs it’s such a fundamental part of the experience I just ignore my base instinct. The chance to find the elusive goodies on offer will never leave me.

On top of all the looting there is an insane amount of killing to be done. You will be going up against a seemingly limitless amount of enemies and when they start swarming towards you they show no signs of stopping. Combat in Victor Vran: Overkill Edition is extremely satisfying. Laying waste to your enemies either by using your weapon set, demonic powers or both feels powerful and leaving a swathe of destruction in your wake always left me feeling strangely satisfied. Skeletons, Spiders, ? pour in from all angles and it’s a struggle to keep up at times especially when each set of monsters has their own strengths and weaknesses. I never found myself overwhelmed though and that’s all down to the Overdrive meter.

Your Overdrive meter is one of your main focuses in the game and you won’t get far if you don’t pay it the attention it demands. Fill this meter up and you can unleash your Demonic Powers with devastating effect. I’ve killed countless swarms of enemies this way and it’s saved my arse when I’ve been cornered and completely outnumbered on many occasions. These powers range from the obviously named Meteor that calls in a meteor strike which levels any enemies unlucky enough to be caught in it’s barrage or the ridiculous Loudspeaker from Hell which hypnotise your enemies into dancing where they stand. And with 15 Demonic Powers to choose from there is bound to be something that will fit in with your style of play.

Destiny Cards are another string to your demonic bow. These passive powers are equipped in vacant slots on your belt as you level up. These come in all shapes and sizes and they can be combined in a variety of different ways so you can mix and match them to suit your playing style. I go for The Runner to boost my speed, The Archer which increases my ranged attack damage and The Beast for better armour penetration when striking enemies. You can also take a chance and gamble these cards for new ones via Transmutation which combines cards to create new ones or leveling up the cards you currently hold.

What classes can you play as I hear you cry. Prepare to be shocked by the total lack of a class system. Victor Vran bucks the RPG trend and does away with it entirely. Victor Vran is all things to everyone and because of this there is no messing around with a skill tree . You can build and equip Victor how you see fit. If you start the game and build Victor up to be a Tank character but find yourself becoming bored you can to a different build just by equipping the right equipment.Seriously he can do it all. No weapon is too mighty for him to handle, no spells are beyond his magic capabilities and no scenario is to much for him to fight his way out of. There are so many different ways to build out your character it boggles the mind and it gives you a sense of freedom I’ve never experienced in an RPG before.

The single player campaign becomes a real challenge later on with boss characters soaking up damage as if it’s just a scratch. But fear not because you don’t have to go into battle alone. You can jump into couch co-op with a friend or you can jump online with up to four other people. Interestingly the online mode doesn’t force you to tackle the levels together. Each player is free to wander off and take on any tasks they want. You can continue to push forward with your quest while another player can take on one of the game’s many other challenges will someone else can go hunting for loot. It’s totally open and I love it.

Victor Vran: Overkill Edition is busting at the seams with content. Every single piece of previously released DLC is included. Fractured Worlds and The Motörhead Through the Ages DLC are included which both have a surprisingly beefy storylines. There is the Cauldron of Chaos which you will have access to once you have leveled up enough. This consists of randomly generates dungeons that if your good and brave enough offer daily rewards for those who complete it’s challenge. The Freakshow Carnival is a PvP arena where you can duel against other players. It’s safe to say that Victor Vran just keeps on giving.

Victor Vran: Overkill Edition is my greatest gaming surprise of 2017. I’m bowled over by how much fun I’m having and that ever present just one more go mentality really has me hooked. The amount of content included guarantees that you’ll be killing and looting for a long, long time. If you’re into RPGs and have yet to give Victor Vran a go I suggest you do so right away.
